TerraPay and Alipay+ Launch Global QR Payments for African Wallets

tech news

TerraPay has entered a strategic partnership with Alipay+ (the cross-border digital payment gateway operated by Ant International) to integrate its Xend wallet interoperability network.

Global payments network TerraPay has partnered with Alipay+, the cross-border digital gateway operated by Ant International to enable international QR code payments for digital wallet users across Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.

The agreement allows local mobile wallet providers to extend their payment capabilities beyond domestic borders. Under the initial rollout, 15 African digital wallets integrated into TerraPay’s Xend network will gain access to over 150 million merchants operating within the Alipay+ global merchant system.

Historically, mobile wallets across emerging markets have operated within national boundaries, forcing international travelers to rely on foreign currency, credit cards or separate payment applications when purchasing goods abroad.

The integration addresses this operational bottleneck by allowing consumers to make point-of-sale payments overseas using their primary domestic wallet. Travelers can scan standard QR codes at participating retail outlets to settle transactions in real time without downloading new applications or managing manual currency conversions.

For TerraPay, the partnership marks a structural expansion beyond backend account-to-account transfers and remittance flows, adding direct in-store merchant payments to its cross-border infrastructure.

By linking its Xend wallet network into Alipay+ through a single integration point, TerraPay enables local fintech operators and telecom providers to offer global spending features without rebuilding their core technology frameworks. Executive leadership noted that the collaboration aligns with growing consumer demand for digital wallets to function seamlessly across international markets.

The integration connects African digital financial platforms into a commercial network spanning more than 220 destination markets.

Representatives from Ant International explained that expanding merchant access to African digital wallets supports broader cross-border trade enabling international businesses to accept local payment methods from traveling consumers while offering African fintech operators a pathway to global scale.
