NCC and major network operators start giving 100MB daily free data to five million public school students for online learning across Nigeria.

Nigeria’s telecom regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC), has joined hands with major phone network operators to start giving free internet data to five million students across the country.

The official nationwide rollout began on October 1, 2026, marking a major government step to make online learning cheap and easy for young people in public schools.

Under this new educational program, eligible students will receive 100 megabytes of free internet data every single day to visit approved educational websites and digital libraries.

When added together over a full month, each student receives about 3 gigabytes of free data every month, which equals up to 36.5 gigabytes of free internet access every year.

Major network providers including MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and T2mobile are managing the technical distribution, ensuring that student phones connect to approved school portals automatically without deducting normal airtime balances.

Giving free internet data to students helps solve a major financial problem facing poor families across Nigerian cities and rural villages.

Buying regular phone data for online homework, reading school textbooks, and researching class projects costs a lot of money that many parents cannot afford.

By making educational websites completely free to open, students can complete school assignments, read digital library books, and practice exam questions without asking their parents for data money or missing out on modern digital education.

Explaining the main reason behind launching this free student data program, Dr. Aminu Maida, who serves as the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, shared the core goal guiding the government’s efforts.

He said the program was part of broader efforts to “expand digital skills, improve access to knowledge and strengthen human capital development” across the entire country.

Highlighting how this daily data helps young people build better lives for themselves and their families, official leadership at the telecom commission emphasized looking at the long-term benefits for the nation.

Dr. Aminu Maida noted that the overall impact of the program should be measured “beyond the daily 100MB allocation, especially when the benefit is considered over months and years and across millions of learners.”

The first phase targets students enrolled in public senior secondary schools, polytechnics, and public universities.

Government officials at the Federal Ministry of Education and the telecom commission have also assured the public that technical plans are currently underway to expand the free data offer to cover more categories of learners across the nation in the near future.
