MTN Ghana secures $202 million 5G spectrum licences to expand high-speed mobile internet across cities and rural communities in Ghana.
Leading telecommunications operator Scancom PLC, popularly known as MTN Ghana, has officially secured new high-speed wireless spectrum licences worth $202 million to launch and expand fifth-generation mobile internet services across the country.
The official notice of award was confirmed on October 2, 2026, following approval from Ghana’s National Communications Authority.
Under the new 15 year spectrum agreement, MTN Ghana has been awarded key operational frequency slots in both the 700 megahertz and 3 gigahertz frequency bands.
The lower 700 megahertz band allows radio signals to travel long distances and pass easily through concrete building walls, while the higher 3 gigahertz band provides massive data capacity in busy, crowded city centers.
By combining both radio bands, the network operator can simultaneously extend high-speed 5G coverage to rural villages while boosting internet speed inside heavily populated commercial cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.
Getting these new radio wave licenses is very important for every mobile phone user in Ghana because demand for fast mobile data is growing rapidly every single day.
Modern daily activities, like sending instant bank transfers, watching online video lessons, streaming sports matches, running small internet shops, and making video calls to family members, require very strong and reliable network signals.

Securing these new frequency bands gives MTN Ghana the extra technical space needed to stop network congestion, prevent constant video buffering, and provide super-fast internet connections to millions of citizens.
Announcing the major regulatory milestone to shareholders and the public through official stock exchange filings, leadership at MTN Ghana confirmed that the strategic frequency acquisition positions the company for long-term digital leadership.
Company representatives stated that “MTN Ghana receives notice of spectrum award in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands,” adding that “the spectrum licences will have a duration of 15 years” to support continuous network expansion.
Explaining how the company is moving quickly to complete all administrative requirements and begin deployment, official management notes revealed that funds have already been set aside to pay regulatory fees.
MTN Ghana highlighted that “MTN Ghana is currently finalising the required formalities and payment obligations associated with the licence acquisition,” ensuring that technical teams can begin installing new 5G equipment on cell towers immediately.
Ghana is entering a highly competitive era for next-generation telecommunications. With rival network operators like Telecel Ghana also preparing commercial 5G launches before the end of the year, MTN Ghana’s massive $202 million investment ensures that Ghanaian smartphone users will enjoy faster, clearer, and more reliable digital connections nationwide.
