The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in collaboration with national security agencies, has launched a comprehensive nationwide crackdown on unlicensed public Wi-Fi resellers and illegal internet distribution hotspots.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UGC) has launched a nationwide enforcement operation targeting unauthorized and unlicensed resellers of public Wi-Fi services operating across the country.
The regulatory action follows extensive consultations with major telecommunications operators, the Uganda Revenue Authority, and members of the Wi-Fi Hotspot Association to address growing regulatory and operational concerns within the sector.
According to regulatory findings, numerous operators have been reselling internet access to the public without obtaining the proper statutory authorizations. This unauthorized practice poses significant risks to consumer protection, fair market competition, government revenue collection and the overall security and integrity of national telecommunications infrastructure.
Under the Uganda Communications Act, providing commercial telecommunications services to the public without an official license issued by the regulator is strictly prohibited.

As part of the ongoing enforcement campaign, regulatory authorities will actively identify and dismantle illegal network installations while confiscating routers and related hardware used in unauthorized operations.
The UCC has strongly urged all unlicensed operators to halt their activities immediately. Additionally, the commission advised consumers to source their internet connectivity exclusively through officially licensed providers to ensure secure, reliable and compliant service standards.
