stc Group and Astranis has Secure Deal to Deploy Dedicated Broadband Satellite for Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is set to boost its national digital infrastructure through a new partnership between US satellite company Astranis Space Technologies and Saudi telecommunications giant stc group to deploy a custom-built, dedicated satellite.
According to Abts, Saudi Arabia is investing more than $8 billion in digital infrastructure as part of efforts to advance the Kingdom’s digital economy, with stc playing a central role in that development.
Expected to enter service in 2027, the satellite will provide enterprise-grade connectivity across the Kingdom, expanding digital access for government operations, businesses and everyday consumers.
The satellite will use Astranis’ proprietary MicroGEO technology, which places smaller, purpose-built satellites into high geostationary orbit. Unlike shared satellite models, this setup grants stc group full control over signal coverage, network capacity and security settings.
A primary benefit of the dedicated satellite is data sovereignty. By routing signals through exclusive national infrastructure, all data flows remain within Saudi Arabia’s borders under enterprise security standards, safeguarding sensitive government and corporate communications.

The satellite deployment supports Saudi Arabia’s broader initiative to modernize its digital economy, supported by over $8 billion in national infrastructure investments led by stc.
Astranis Chief Commercial Officer Doug Abts emphasized that the dedicated satellite will function as an independent backup layer for existing underground fiber cables and tower networks. This additional space-based layer ensures continuous internet and mobile connectivity during ground outages, maintenance or natural disasters, reinforcing the Kingdom’s overall network stability.
