Globacom Loses Over 46,000 Active Mobile Subscribers as Competitors Gain Ground in Nigeria

Globacom loses over 46,000 active mobile subscribers in August while competing networks continue to gain active phone users.

Globacom has officially suffered a loss of over 46,000 active phone subscribers across its Nigerian network. The official industry customer data figures were released by the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) on October 12, 2026, tracking active mobile phone connections recorded during the month of August.

Under the latest official industry audit, Globacom saw its active customer count decline from nineteen point 1.5 million users down to 19.1 million users in a single month.

The drop in active SIM cards highlights growing competition in Nigeria’s mobile market, where rival networks are battling fiercely to attract everyday phone users.

While Globacom experienced customer losses, main competitors like Airtel Nigeria added over 85 thousand new active subscribers to reach 44.6 million users.

Market leader MTN Nigeria also maintained its dominant position with over 78 million active phone connections, while 9mobile continued rebuilding its base with over 3.6 million active lines.

Tracking active SIM card numbers is very important for everyday citizens, local business owners, and phone buyers across Nigeria.

In many communities, people drop phone lines or switch to new network providers when call quality drops, internet data runs out too quickly, or network signals fail during crucial work hours.

When a major network loses tens of thousands of active SIM cards in one month, it shows that customers are moving their money to rival networks that offer stronger signal coverage, faster browsing speeds, and better value for daily airtime.

Explaining why tracking active phone lines reflects true market performance rather than total SIM cards sold, industry analysts and government regulators emphasized that SIM card cleanup rules keep customer data accurate.

Technology reporting platforms reviewing the official telecom numbers noted that “this drop comes despite the broader growth recorded in the sector, as other major operators expanded their user base during the same period”.

Highlighting how network stability and good customer support drive user choices in a competitive telecom market, industry commentators explained that phone users vote with their wallets.

Telecom market guides reviewing the official report added that “the decline underscores the tough competition among mobile operators in Nigeria, where network quality and pricing play a key role in subscriber retention”.

The Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) continues to enforce strict Quality of Service guidelines across all operators.

As mobile phone users across Lagos, Abuja, and other states demand faster internet data and reliable call connections, telecom providers are under increasing pressure to upgrade network masts and keep customers fully satisfied.
