Mastercard has signed a landmark five-year strategic partnership with Moovn Technologies, a prominent pan-African mobility and digital logistics platform to expand seamless digital payments and financial inclusion across East Africa.

Mastercard and Moovn Technologies have signed a strategic five-year agreement to expand secure digital financial services and payment solutions across East Africa.

The partnership combines Mastercard’s global payment infrastructure with Moovn’s integrated mobile platform providing everyday consumers, drivers, delivery riders, merchants and small businesses with more flexible ways to pay, get paid and transfer funds.

Under the multi-year deal, MoovnPay will scale a comprehensive suite of financial tools directly within its mobility, logistics, and e-commerce applications. Key features integrated into the platform include issuing both virtual and physical prepaid Mastercard cards to users within a unified digital wallet, enabling online and in-app payment processing via Mastercard Payment Gateway Services alongside local payment acceptance features in Kenya and Tanzania, utilizing Mastercard Move to facilitate peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers and eligible international money remittances, and incorporating Shooga Moovn’s community financial solution designed for donations, fundraising and peer payments.

The collaboration arrives as digital commerce accelerates across the continent. Industry estimates project Africa’s digital payments economy to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030, supported by surging mobile adoption and expanding instant payment systems. Furthermore, recent data shows that 95% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya already accept digital payments with the vast majority prioritizing simple, user-friendly checkout methods.

Highlighting the vision behind the long-term collaboration, Shehryar Ali, Senior Vice President and Country Manager for East Africa at Mastercard stated that

“Payments are increasingly woven into the platforms people use every day to travel, work and trade. Moovn has built an ecosystem that brings mobility, commerce and financial services together and Mastercard’s global network and secure technology will help extend its reach. Together, we are opening new pathways into the digital economy for consumers, drivers, merchants and small businesses across East Africa and beyond.”

Godwin Gabriel, founder and Group Chief Executive of Moovn Technologies, emphasized the broader impact of the partnership by saying

“Our collaboration with Mastercard is about building more than a payment product. By connecting MoovnPay, Shooga and our mobility, logistics and commerce platforms to trusted global payment capabilities, we are creating an integrated financial and lifestyle ecosystem where participation and trust can unlock greater access, convenience and opportunity for consumers, drivers, merchants and small businesses across Africa.”

The agreement builds on MoovnPay’s participation in the Mastercard Start Path Emerging Fintech program which originally brought the two companies together.

Following successful early rollouts, the expanded five-year partnership will focus on launching prepaid card portfolios, deploying localized merchant payment solutions across East Africa and scaling digital wallet capabilities to drive financial inclusion and economic empowerment throughout the region.
