Nigeria launches an eleven-character digital postcode system to give every building a precise digital address for banking and shopping.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerian Postal Service, has officially switched on a new national digital postcode system across the entire country.
The digital address infrastructure was officially activated on October 1, 2026, marking a major milestone in giving every home, store, and office building a verified digital location.
Under this new digital address framework, every physical building in Nigeria is assigned a unique 11 character alphanumeric code.
This special code works like a digital house address that pinpoints an exact location on a digital map. Developed in partnership with local technology firm Milsat, the digital system allows citizens, emergency services, dispatch riders, online shopping stores, and commercial banks to locate any house easily without relying on vague landmarks or unmarked streets.
Just as the National Identification Number identifies individuals and the Bank Verification Number identifies bank account owners, the digital postcode serves as a national digital rail for physical home locations.
Giving every house an exact digital address is very important for ordinary citizens, small market traders, and online shoppers across Nigeria.
In many towns and cities, people lose online orders, wait days for package delivery, or fail bank address checks because their streets have no official names or house numbers.
When banks ask for address proof before opening accounts or giving business loans, many informal workers get rejected because they cannot verify where they live.
Having a recognized eleven-character digital code allows everyday citizens to verify their home location easily, receive home deliveries faster, and access formal bank loans.

Explaining why giving every house a digital identity represents a huge step forward for business growth, safety, and financial access, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, rallied widespread public support for the new national infrastructure.
Minister Bosun Tijani stated that “the digital postcode system would enhance national security, improve service delivery and support economic development,” while urging citizens to embrace the new address tool.
Highlighting how building a reliable location network solves major business problems for banks, delivery companies, and emergency workers, industry commentators noted that a digital address system forms the backbone of modern trade.
Tech reporting journals covering the official rollout explained that “the new postcode is the latest attempt to give every location in Nigeria a verifiable digital identity,” adding that “when it works, it will be impactful to key sectors like commerce, banking, lending, etc”.
Citizens are already downloading official postal mobile apps to check their digital building codes. As government agencies, banks, and online shopping apps integrate the 11 character codes into daily operations, Nigeria’s new digital postcode infrastructure is set to transform national logistics, banking verification, and online trade.
