The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has officially launched National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026.

Nigeria has officially launched National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 initiating a month-long nationwide campaign designed to strengthen digital security, protect citizens from emerging online threats and foster a safer digital economy.

Organized by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the campaign serves as a national call to action for individuals, private enterprises, and public institutions. The initiative emphasizes that protecting Nigeria’s digital landscape is a shared responsibility, urging citizens and organizations to adopt essential cyber hygiene habits as digital adoption accelerates across online banking, e-commerce and public administration.

To equip the public against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, NITDA outlined core security guidelines designed to protect personal financial information and enterprise networks.

The agency strongly advised citizens never to share One-Time Passwords (OTPs) personal identification numbers (PINs) or online banking login credentials under any circumstances. Furthermore, NITDA cautioned against uploading sensitive personal records, financial data or proprietary corporate information to public artificial intelligence models and unfamiliar digital platforms. Users are urged to verify website links and digital media before interacting with them, exercise caution regarding unsolicited messages containing urgent language, and remain vigilant against synthetic audio and deepfake visuals designed to manipulate victims into revealing confidential information.

Beyond immediate credential security, the campaign highlights the broader risks of digital footprint exposure and the importance of data recovery infrastructure.

NITDA warned that oversharing personal details on public social media channels enables cybercriminals to craft targeted social engineering attacks and phishing scams. To limit the operational impact of potential cyber incidents such as ransomware infections or system disruptions the agency recommended that individuals and corporate entities maintain regular, secure backups of vital data stored both offline and in cloud environments.

Through its Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team (CERRT.ng) structure, NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to providing Nigerians with the necessary tools, incident reporting frameworks, and technical guidance to mitigate digital risks. Officials emphasized that establishing robust cybersecurity standards and proactive digital habits will safeguard citizens while supporting a resilient, trusted digital economy across the nation.
