Vodacom Tanzania and Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL), a subsidiary of AB InBev, have partnered to launch a digital transformation campaign targeting 24,000 small-scale retail merchants and informal vendors across Tanzania.

Vodacom Tanzania and Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL PLC) have established a two-year strategic partnership designed to equip up to 24,000 small retailers across the country with practical business management skills and digital financial tools.

Formalized through a two-year Memorandum of Understanding under the initiative “Growing Retailers Innovatively Together” (GRIT) the program targets small shop owners and informal merchants who form the core distribution link between large manufacturing companies and daily consumers.

The initiative officially launched its first regional session on September 16, 2026, in Mwanza bringing together 150 local entrepreneurs to participate in hands-on workshops covering working capital management, inventory planning, customer service and digital payment integration.

As part of the collaboration, Vodacom Tanzania is introducing participating store owners to its suite of small-business digital and financial platforms including Lipa kwa M-Pesa for cashless customer payments, SME Bomba, M-Wekeza and M-Koba.

These digital tools allow small merchants to move away from cash-only transactions, streamline daily bookkeeping, track remaining inventory and build verifiable financial records. By replacing informal cash management with digital transaction logs, small retailers can better control cash flows, optimize stock reordering and build the necessary credit history required to access formal commercial financing.

The GRIT initiative utilizes a hybrid learning model, combining face-to-face workshops led by industry experts with ongoing digital platform modules. Throughout the two-year rollout, Vodacom Tanzania and TBL PLC will jointly monitor and evaluate participating businesses to measure operational improvements and track income growth.

Neema Temba, Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at TBL PLC highlighted that supporting small merchants strengthens the entire commercial supply chain noting that empowering retailers with business skills directly enhances supply chain stability and economic resilience.

Concurrently, Nguvu Kamando, Business Director at Vodacom Tanzania, emphasized that providing small enterprises with digital technology and practical skills boosts store productivity, drives financial inclusion and supports Tanzania’s broader digital economy goals.
