The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has honored Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani as one of its 2026 Goalkeepers Champions.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has named Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, as one of its 2026 Goalkeepers Champions.

The recognition comes as part of the foundation’s 10th annual Goalkeepers initiative which focuses on accelerating global progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals by promoting equitable artificial intelligence.

The announcement aligns with the foundation’s 2026 Goalkeepers Report, “Make This Matter: AI, Equity and the Choice We Can’t Delay,” which warns that without deliberate intervention, advanced technologies risk expanding the economic divide between wealthy and developing nations. To address this challenge, the Gates Foundation committed $1 billion over two years to support global efforts aimed at making AI tools accessible, localized and useful in lower-income countries.

Dr. Tijani was recognized for his leadership in advancing digital sovereignty and building domestic AI capabilities across Nigeria and the broader African continent. Rather than relying strictly on external artificial intelligence models trained on foreign data, Tijani has pushed for localized digital infrastructure that reflects regional realities.

His initiatives in Nigeria include spearheading the National AI Strategy, launching a national AI scaling hub and driving the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program.

The training initiative has already equipped nearly 300,000 young Nigerians with technical skills, empowering local talent to generate datasets in native languages and create AI solutions tailored for regional agriculture, healthcare, and education. Additionally, his ministry continues to expand nationwide fiber-optic infrastructure to ensure baseline digital connectivity.

The 2026 Goalkeepers Champions cohort highlights innovators and policymakers working to ensure that technological advancements translate into broad societal benefits. Alongside Tijani, the Gates Foundation recognized several prominent global advocates including Indian computer scientist and Founding Director of BharatGen, Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan, for developing multilingual AI frameworks that expand technology access across diverse linguistic groups.

Joining him is Indian technology leader Debjani Ghosh, honored for nearly three decades of work driving human-centric AI, digital policy and inclusive economic development, alongside Zimbabwean digital policy researcher Chenai Chair, who was recognized for her advocacy around African-language AI models, digital rights and gender-equitable technology governance.

Completing the cohort is Swedish biotechnology entrepreneur and agricultural technology innovator Martin Blomberg, recognized for his work transforming global food systems through digital solutions.

The Gates Foundation emphasized that the choices made by governments, technology companies, and philanthropies over the next 12 to 18 months will determine whether AI primarily benefits well-resourced populations or serves as a tool to close systemic global inequities.
