MTN Uganda through its corporate social responsibility arm MTN Foundation has commissioned a state-of-the-art Information and Communications Technology (ICT) hub at the Palabek Refugee Settlement in Lamwo District, Northern Uganda.

The newly established facility aims to bridge the digital divide in remote displacement settings by providing free digital access, vocational skilling and technology training to both refugees and members of the surrounding host community. The initiative forms part of MTN’s broader commitment to driving digital inclusion and social empowerment across underserved rural areas in Uganda.

The Palabek ICT Hub is equipped with modern computers, high-speed internet connectivity, solar power backup systems and tailored educational software.

Designed to support learners of all ages, the center offers training programs ranging from basic computer literacy and internet navigation to digital entrepreneurship, online job searching, and basic coding. By incorporating reliable solar energy systems, the hub ensures uninterrupted operational capacity despite the off-grid infrastructure challenges common to remote refugee settlements.

Beyond providing technology access, the ICT hub is structured to promote social cohesion and shared economic opportunity between displaced populations and the local host community.

By bringing refugee youth and local Ugandan residents together in a shared learning environment, the program encourages collaboration, mutual understanding, and skill sharing. Representatives from MTN Foundation and local district authorities highlighted that equipping youth with market-relevant digital skills allows them to access remote work, establish small digital businesses and improve their livelihoods ultimately driving economic self-reliance across the Lamwo District.
