The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the GSMA have announced a strategic partnership to support African-led Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions and scale local language model development across the continent.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the GSMA have entered into a strategic partnership to strengthen Africa’s artificial intelligence ecosystem focusing on accelerating the development, deployment and scaling of African-led AI and local language technologies across the continent.

Published by Joyce Onyeagoro on TechAfrica News, the initiative brings together the GSMA’s extensive mobile industry network and technical expertise with the UNDP’s international development programs and innovation platforms. The collaborative effort aims to address critical gaps in local data representation and language processing, ensuring that emerging artificial intelligence tools are built to reflect African linguistic diversity and social priorities rather than relying solely on foreign-developed datasets.

A core objective of the partnership is to connect local software developers, research institutions and tech innovators with the physical and digital infrastructure required to build enterprise-ready artificial intelligence tools.

To achieve this, the initiative will leverage specialized talent and resources across both organizations’ networks, including the UNDP-supported University Innovation Pods (UniPods) dedicated AI Labs, higher education institutions and ecosystem partners. By providing local innovators with direct access to compute resources, technical mentoring and testing environments, the program aims to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial deployment. Mobilizing these innovation hubs allows local teams to build sovereign data models and specialized applications designed specifically for regional economic needs.

Beyond technical development, the partnership focuses on building sustainable pathways for scaling African AI solutions into functioning commercial enterprise products and public services.

Speaking on the strategic vision of the initiative, Angela Wamola, Head of Africa at the GSMA emphasized that the collaboration focuses on mobilizing regional talent and infrastructure to accelerate artificial intelligence solutions that serve real-world communities. By combining mobile network operator reach with international development frameworks, the UNDP and GSMA aim to unlock new economic opportunities, expand access to digital services in native African languages and establish a resilient, locally owned technology foundation across the continent.
