Cascador and Sterling Bank launch a $200 million credit backstop fund to help Nigerian startups and small businesses get bank loans.

Entrepreneur support accelerator Cascador and major commercial lender Sterling Bank have officially launched a two hundred million dollar SME Credit Backstop Fund across Nigeria.

The strategic financial partnership was formally announced on October 14, 2026, creating a special credit reserve to protect commercial banks from loan risks while opening up big funding opportunities for growing small businesses.

Under this new credit arrangement, the $200 million reserve fund acts as a financial guarantee that supports up to one billion dollars in total bank loans for small and medium enterprises.

The initiative operates through Riverwell Platform Holding Limited in the United Kingdom and its local operating unit, Riverwell Platform Services Nigeria, which assesses business health, verifies borrower records, and monitors loan payments.

In the past, traditional banks refused to give big loans to young technology companies, food processors, and small business owners because these growing firms lacked land documents, heavy machinery, or expensive property to put up as collateral.

Through this new backstop fund, Cascador, venture capital firms, and startup studios will assess, recommend, and guarantee promising businesses so Sterling Bank can confidently issue larger and longer-term business loans without asking for impossible physical collateral.

Unlocking big bank loans for growing businesses is very important for everyday citizens, local market vendors, and young job seekers across Nigeria.

In many towns and cities, thousands of brilliant entrepreneurs build good products, hire local workers, and serve thousands of customers, but their growth stalls because they cannot get bank loans to buy bigger machines, rent larger warehouses, or hire more staff.

When banks feel safe enough to lend money to hardworking business owners, those companies expand their shops, buy more stock from local farmers, and create thousands of new daily jobs for young people.

Explaining how combining credit protection with careful business screening gives commercial lenders the confidence to approve bigger loans for proven companies, executive leadership at Sterling Bank praised the joint effort.

Group Executive of Sterling Bank, Obinna Ukachukwu, stated that “at Sterling, the strength of this partnership lies in how it addresses lending risk across the entire financing journey”.

Reassuring business owners that bringing together venture funds, business screeners, and bank lenders builds a safer pipeline for long-term growth capital, company leaders highlighted the true value of the loan model.

Obinna Ukachukwu added that “this combines a stronger borrower pipeline with structured assessment and ongoing monitoring, giving us greater confidence to provide larger, longer-term loans. As a lending partner, we see the potential for this arrangement to bolster SME lending, helping proven businesses access the capital they need to scale”.

Cascador has supported over 80 growing African businesses since 2019, with its alumni raising over one hundred and fifty million dollars.

As the new $200 million credit backstop fund begins accepting business nominations from venture studios across the country, thousands of Nigerian small businesses are preparing to access the bank loans needed to expand their operations.
