China Mobile International has launched a four-month innovation program tailored for Kenyan university and college students.
China Mobile International (CMI) has officially launched a four-month innovation program in Kenya designed to bridge the gap between higher education and the tech industry, offering university students mentorship, expert guidance and pathways to commercialize their tech solutions.
The initiative was unveiled during a special workshop and hackathon held in Nairobi, bringing together institutional leaders, industry experts, and students from the University of Nairobi and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Speaking at the launch event, John Kipchumba Tanui the Kenya’s Principal Secretary for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy emphasized the importance of fostering local talent. He called for deeper collaboration between corporate partners and academic institutions, encouraging students to move beyond academic competitions and focus on building practical pilot projects, viable businesses and scalable enterprises that create jobs.
The program places a strong emphasis on inclusivity, actively encouraging gender-balanced teams to ensure diverse representation across Kenya’s growing technology and innovation landscape.

Throughout the four-month initiative, participating student teams will develop technology projects across a wide range of advanced domains, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, software engineering, Internet of Things (IoT), data connectivity, big data analytics, digital twins, blockchain, cybersecurity and 5G.
To ensure projects have real-world impact, each student team will be paired with a corporate sponsor from CMI who will provide professional mentorship. The competition prioritizes working prototypes and scalable innovations, with the ultimate winning team receiving dedicated corporate development support from CMI to help transition their project from a university lab into a market-ready deployment.
Registration for eligible students at participating universities runs through November 2, 2026 with the final project presentations scheduled for February 27, 2027.
