Vodacom has announced a major infrastructure investment of over R600 million dedicated to expanding network coverage, enhancing mobile broadband speeds, and bolstering power resilience across the Mpumalanga province in South Africa.
Vodacom has announced a major capital investment exceeding R600 million for the current financial year aimed at upgrading and expanding network infrastructure across South Africa’s Mpumalanga province.
Building on a previous investment of R620 million, the comprehensive initiative focuses on extending high-speed broadband coverage, improving network capacity and bridging the digital divide across underserved rural, township and urban communities.
As part of its ongoing network modernization program, Vodacom has expanded its physical site footprint from just over 1,300 locations to 1,408 sites across Mpumalanga. The capital rollout targets all 17 local municipalities across the Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande and Nkangala district municipalities.
Key highlights of the infrastructure rollout include accelerating the deployment of fast 4G and 5G services in remote areas supported by licensed spectrum bands such as L700, L1800, and L2100 to maximize data speed and coverage alongside increasing the proportion of fibre-connected network sites from 41% to 45% to significantly enhance overall network performance and data reliability.
Furthermore, the initiative includes launching a dedicated “Summer Plan Project” to prepare over 500 network sites against heavy seasonal rains, alongside robust backup power solutions (such as generators and batteries) to mitigate the impact of electrical outages, load disruptions, vandalism and cable theft.

Network usage trends across the province reflect a rapid increase in demand for next-generation connectivity. While 4G previously carried the vast majority of data traffic, recent distribution shows 78% of traffic on 4G and 20% on 5G, highlighting the growing adoption of advanced mobile technologies among customers.
To ensure that local residents, small businesses, and public institutions can fully participate in the digital economy without facing prohibitive costs, Vodacom continues to tackle affordability barriers. Through personalized data platforms like Just4You and Just4YourTown, customers receive customized voice and data bundles tailored to their specific usage patterns and geographic locations, making reliable communication more accessible and cost-effective across the province.
