Federal Government launches NIPOST digital postcode system, assigning a unique 11-character code to every building in Nigeria.

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerian Postal Service(NIPOST), has officially launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System across all thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory(FCT).

The nationwide rollout went live on October 1, 2026, giving every house, shop, office, and building a unique eleven-character digital location code.

Under this new digital address system, every building in Nigeria receives a unique combination of letters and numbers generated using advanced satellite mapping technology.

For example, two letters identify the state, while the remaining characters pinpoint the local government area, district, street, and exact building.

Citizens and business owners can simply visit the official postcode website or download the NIPOST Postcode mobile application to look up their exact digital address for free.

Creating precise digital addresses solves a massive daily struggle for delivery drivers, online shoppers, emergency workers, and bank agents across Nigerian towns and rural villages.

In many cities and communities, streets lack clear names or visible house numbers, forcing people to describe locations using landmark descriptions like blue gates, church junctions, or roadside shops.

Having a clear digital postcode helps dispatch riders deliver packages without getting lost, allows ambulances and police officers to reach emergency scenes quickly, and helps banks verify customer home addresses easily.

Explaining why giving every building a clear digital identity is necessary for the country to function smoothly, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who serves as the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, highlighted the fundamental purpose of the project.

He asked, “For a country to work efficiently, we need to be able to answer one very basic question. Where?”

Urging citizens to find their unique codes and share them with businesses and government offices for daily transactions, the minister emphasized that every person and community deserves easy access to services.

Dr. Bosun Tijani added, “Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity.”

Bad addressing causes Nigeria to lose between 50 billion and 80 billion naira every single year through failed package deliveries, delayed services, and operational waste.

By establishing Africa’s first building-level digital postcode system, NIPOST gives millions of Nigerians a modern location identity that connects households directly to the growing digital economy.
