DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange (IX) operator has officially launched an open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server designed to revolutionize AI-powered network management.
Global internet and cloud exchange operator DE-CIX has launched an open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that enables businesses to search for, procure, deploy and manage digital network connections using simple, natural language through artificial intelligence agents.
The new tool can be downloaded and integrated directly into compatible AI applications and large language models that support the MCP standard making it easier for customers to interact with network infrastructure using their preferred AI platforms.
Traditionally, managing network architecture and dealing with multiple application programming interfaces (APIs) can be complex and time-consuming for IT teams. Survey data from DE-CIX shows that IT professionals still spend over 11 hours a week troubleshooting connectivity issues.
By introducing the new MCP server, network engineers can use AI agents to handle routine tasks seamlessly such as identifying and exploring available connectivity options (including cloud on-ramps) booking, adjusting and scaling connectivity services using natural-language commands, checking real-time service status and network health and generating automated code to execute tasks, thereby eliminating the need to comb through extensive technical documentation for manual API operations.

The newly released server builds upon DE-CIX’s long-standing support for the IX-API project, an open-source initiative designed to standardize how internet exchange platforms communicate and collaborate across the digital ecosystem.
Highlighting the practical motivation behind the launch, Dr. Thomas King, Chief Technology Officer at DE-CIX noted that
“Network architecture is becoming increasingly complex, meaning that network operators and enterprise IT teams are faced with multiple challenges to build and operate their infrastructure according to their needs. The DE-CIX server responds to the needs of customers for simpler interconnection. This is the next step in the ongoing process of automating our platform, making interconnection on-demand, programmable, observable, modular and secure.”
As businesses increasingly turn to AI agents to streamline day-to-day operations, the innovation represents a major step toward making digital infrastructure more programmable, automated and accessible through everyday conversation.
