Bolt partners with BYD and local taxi association SAMTEA to bring BYD Dolphin Surf electric ride-hailing cars to Johannesburg.

Bolt has officially expanded its electric vehicle transport category to the streets of Johannesburg. The new battery-powered ride expansion was publicly disclosed on October 21, 2026, building on an earlier clean transport launch in Cape Town.

Under this new electric transport rollout, the ride-hailing company is bringing Chinese-made BYD Dolphin Surf electric cars into major business routes across Johannesburg.

Passengers can now book battery-powered rides through the standard mobile application in commercial areas like Sandton, routes leading to and from OR Tambo International Airport, and several eastern suburbs.

The new electric car fleet is owned and managed directly by the South African Meter Taxi and E-Hailing Association, an organization affiliated with the South African National Taxi Council.

By letting the local taxi association manage the car fleet, individual drivers can operate clean electric vehicles without taking out heavy bank loans to purchase expensive new cars themselves.

Electric cars help drivers cut down on daily running costs because charging with electricity costs less than buying petrol fuel, while battery motors require fewer repairs than traditional engines.

Bolt aims to deploy 500 electric vehicles across South Africa by December 2026 as competition grows with rival transport apps.

Bringing electric cars into busy city transport systems is very important for everyday drivers, city commuters, and local business owners across South Africa.

For many years, high petrol prices, expensive car maintenance, and rising vehicle prices have made it very hard for ride-hailing drivers to earn good profits and take money home to their families.

When digital transport apps partner with local taxi groups to introduce electric cars, hardworking drivers can save money on daily fuel, pay less for vehicle maintenance, and earn a steady living.

Furthermore, replacing petrol engines with clean electric cars reduces dangerous smoke in city air and makes public travel cleaner and quieter for everyone.

Explaining how uniting traditional taxi operators and modern digital ride platforms helps create a stronger future for all transport workers, executive leaders from the local taxi association shared positive words about working together.

Highlighting the importance of moving forward with modern technology while protecting local driver livelihoods, representative of the South African Meter Taxi and E-Hailing Association, Mr. Shange, stated that “we must move with the times and evolve. That does not mean forgetting our roots; it means building something stronger for the next generation”.

Reflecting on past misunderstandings between traditional meter taxi drivers and app-based drivers, industry leadership noted that working as partners helps solve common business challenges facing transport workers across the city.

Emphasizing the value of unity in building a safer, more profitable transport industry, Mr. Shange added that “there was a time when meter taxis and e-hailing were viewed as competitors, particularly as the market was disrupted and different parts of the sector responded in different ways. But through continued engagement, we have begun to find one another and recognise that many of the challenges facing the industry affect all of us, including our drivers“.

Competitors like Uber are also expanding electric car fleets across South African cities. As more charging points open in commercial districts, drivers and passengers across Johannesburg are embracing electric transport for clean, smooth, and quiet daily travel.
